Flooring Calculator
Estimate floor area and how many packs of flooring to buy.
How the flooring calculation works
The room area is length × width. The calculator adds your selected waste allowance, divides by pack coverage and rounds up to a whole pack.
How much waste should I allow?
Around 5–10% is common for straightforward layouts. Rooms with many corners, irregular edges or diagonal laying patterns can require more.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include underlay?
No. Underlay is normally sold by area and should be calculated separately using the room area and the product coverage.
Should I round packs up?
Yes. Packaged flooring is generally purchased in whole packs, so the calculator always rounds up.
How to turn room area into flooring packs
Pack coverage is the key product-specific input. Use the square-metre coverage printed on the exact laminate, engineered wood, vinyl plank or other packaged flooring you plan to install. The calculator divides the floor area by that pack coverage and rounds up to whole packs, because partial packs usually cannot be purchased.
Choosing a waste allowance
A simple rectangular room laid in a straightforward pattern usually produces fewer offcuts than a room with alcoves, several doorways or a diagonal/herringbone layout. Waste is also affected by board length and by whether a usable offcut from one row can start the next. The percentage input is therefore a planning allowance rather than a fixed industry rule.
Measure irregular rooms in sections
For L-shaped or linked spaces, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each area and add them before applying the pack calculation. Do not subtract every kitchen unit or small obstruction automatically: flooring installation details vary and some areas may need material beneath removable units. Underlay, trims, thresholds, moisture barriers and expansion gaps are not included in the pack estimate and should be checked separately.
